SpiritualitySpirituality is a key element of healing at Three Rivers. We invite the students to discover and develop their spirituality. We have found that due to the intensity of a person’s experience in nature, while in the company of caring people, one can find him or herself in touch with an experience best described as spiritual. Spirituality as defined in Webster’s New World College Dictionary, is said to have its root meaning in the "breath, courage, vigor, the soul, (and) life." We believe that spirituality is an expression of our true selves, our essence, the essences of others, and of life itself. Away from the distractions of our daily lives, surrounded by the raw beauty of nature, warmed by the sun’s rays, able to observe the intelligence of animals and the workings of life in its natural state, an expanded awareness of who one is and one’s connection to the whole of life emerges.
Finding a sense of belonging, of purpose and connection are natural outcomes of a healthy nature experience. We believe that feeling this kind of wholeness is an essential component in building healthy life skills, and in our view is an important form of spirituality. Three Rivers is not a denominational program and does not endorse any specific religion. However, we welcome, respect, and encourage each individual’s preference regarding his or her spiritual path. If parents request that their child have specific spiritual reading materials, we make sure that those materials are available to the child during his/her stay at Three Rivers. If a family is active in a religious institution, we encourage them to include a person from their place of worship in the aftercare plan.
